Welcome to Year 5. We look forward to working with you as your child goes on this exciting learning journey! The team is led by Mr Groves (phase leader), Mr Roberts (5R) Mrs Buchanan (5B) and Miss Walmsley (5W). The children will also be supported by Sharon and Marta.
During Year 5, we encourage a growing sense of responsibility and independence in our pupils, while ensuring that each child is supported in their learning journey. Independence is encouraged through responsibility of stationery, completion of home learning and reflection of behaviour. We hope that you will support us in developing this independence by giving the children increasing responsibilities at home.
We look forward to meeting you over the Autumn term. Forging strong relationships with families is important to us and we encourage you to discuss the needs of your children as they arise.

Curriculum
English is taught daily and explores a range of reading, speaking and writing skills. In addition, the children will be working on developing their self-editing skills. Throughout the year, we will be using a range of high-quality texts to inspire the children. Some of the texts that we will be using include The Buried Crown by Ally Sherrick, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr and Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton.
Maths will be taught on a daily basis where previous skills and concepts will be revised and built upon. Children will continue to develop their recall of number facts (e.g. addition and subtraction and times tables and related division facts) and it is vital that they practise daily at home to support with this.
Our Science topics this year will build upon knowledge from previous years. Science topics include properties and changes of materials, animals including humans (puberty will be covered during these sessions), Earth and space, forces and living things and their habitats.
In our Autumn term wider curriculum, we have the opportunity to learn about the culture in Scandinavia and the invasion of Britain by the Anglo-Saxons before exploring the Vikings, 20th Century conflict and Biomes later in the year.
All PE sessions will be run by AMSA Coaches. 5B and 5R will have their PE lessons on Tuesday mornings from 8:55 -10:45am. 5W will have PE lessons on Wednesday mornings from 8:55 – 10:45am.

Home Learning
Most home learning will be set and completed on Google Classroom (Maths, SPaG, and Topic). During the second week of term, your child will be provided with their login information and this can also be found in the front of their home learning book.
Home learning will be set every Wednesday to be handed in (online and in person) on the following Monday. Home learning will consist of the following tasks:
-
Maths Quiz (Google Form)
-
SPaG Quiz (Google Form)
-
Topic Quiz (Google Form)
-
Reading comprehension (In home learning book)
-
Handwriting practice (In home learning book)
-
Spelling practice (In home learning book)
As well as the homework that is set, the pupils are encouraged to be reading as much as possible and practise their times tables through Time Tables Rockstars (https://ttrockstars.com/) or other games (https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/mental-maths).
In the unlikely event that all home learning is not completed on time, children will be reminded and given that night to complete it. If all home learning is not completed by the next morning, children will miss some of their lunch time to discuss the importance of completing their home learning. We will keep in contact with families if we have concerns about home learning not being completed so that we can work together to support children.
We look forward to the year ahead and hope your child will have a happy and successful time in Year 5.
Best wishes,
The Year 5 Team
