Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

In Year 4, your children will be taught by Miss Katie Forrester (4F), Miss Molly Parkinson (4P) or Miss Kelly Averis (4A).  Working alongside the classes will be our support staff: Rachel Sood, Lisa Sturley and Sharon Dorans.

From the first week in September until the end of the school year, Year 4 are fully engaged in a learning journey which takes them from life in Ancient Greece to living like a Roman.

We encourage children to reflect on their learning, challenge themselves and make the most of different opportunities offered in school. Through exercising our different learning muscles (resourcefulness, persistence, innovation, collaboration and reflection), we aim for children to develop a growth mind set and to understand the skills needed to be a good learner. In the stimulating environments of our classrooms, we establish clear routines and have high expectations of each child to reach their full potential. Every week the children will work with a new learning partner as well as often collaborating in a small group.

There are many highlights in Year 4, which include:

  • A  performance presented to families and the rest of the school.

  • A number of educational visits, such as a trip to The British Museum.

We consider communication between home and school to be vitally important. Please feel free to contact us after school in the playground or via email:

In daily English sessions, children are stimulated by high quality texts through the Power of Reading approach, which link with History and Geography topics. The texts are used as starting points for drama activities and teaching spelling and grammar. This motivates and prepares the children for a variety of writing activities.

In Maths, children apply their understanding of the place value of whole numbers and fractions, measures, statistics and shape to real life contexts and learn to work systematically on maths investigations, often testing conjectures and developing reasoning skills. A key focus in Year 4 is learning, consolidating and applying multiplication and division facts.

During the year, children will be investigating Science topics such as Electricity- circuits and conductors, Animals including Humans, Living things and their Habitats, Sounds and States of Matter. Practical activities motivate learning by encouraging independence and enquiry.

Through the excitement of learning about Ancient Greece, Mediterranean Europe and Frida Kahlo, the children are immersed in activities in History, Geography, Art and Design & Technology.
